Some are fairly long, while others are quite short the most interesting of them have an intriguing mixture of explanatory and narrative content. They are addressed to various of the gods, and are sources for some of the earliest mythography we have. The so-called Homeric Hymns are certainly not Homeric in origin, but they are hymns, they’re in dactylic hexameter (Homer’s meter), and they’re fairly old - probably from the seventh and sixth centuries B.C. This is the other part of the Homeric tradition, as it formed up late in the ancient world, and it contains some very interesting material.
